ABSTRACT

This article presents the design of an Application in Android operating system, with the aim of monitoring movements in real time through a 2D graphic representation system for a group of Mobile Robots with medical assistance capabilities, in a portable and economical way. In addition, to provide information about the robots positioning in Cartesian coordinates, percentage of current battery and state of operation during their navigation. The robots are link to an Android mobile device through wireless communication in MQTT or WiFi protocol, depending on the technical case available. As a basis of application there is in the first instance a Covid hospital, the need arises as a means of medical assistance between the patient with Covid symptoms and the doctor, nurses and support staff in their treatment and isolation, in order to avoid contact, contagion and the additional expense of wearing special clothing to treat the patient. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To report a clinical case of spontaneous pneumomediastinum in a patient with COVID-2019, a disease with a rare complication. Clinical case report: We report the case of an 86-year-old patient with a clinical condicion of fever of 38o C and respiratory symptoms (cough with whitish secretions, dyspnea on moderate exertion). He underwent a polymerase chain reaction test for coronavirus disease 2019, which resulted positive. On the fourth day of his hospitalization, he his clinical condition worsened, including cough and progressive dyspnea accompanied by oxygen saturation less than 91%. The presence of pneumomediastinum was revealed by high-resolution imaging studies (computed tomography angiography of the chest). Discussion: The 2019 coronavirus disease pandemic has given rise to a global public health emergency, which requires health personnel to be familiar with symptoms, imaging results, and complications of this disease, such as pneumomediastinum found in this case. Conclution: Spontaneous pneumomediastinum is a rare complication that occurs in the inflammatory phase of this disease.

ABSTRACT

The social dimension of chemistry is relevant and present in numerous socio-scientific issues, for example, the use of plastics. These issues can be covered at school by implementing strategies such as role-playing, which allow different perspectives to be understood, thereby helping to promote changes in attitude. This paper presents a pilot-study about the design and results obtained in the role-playing game "Should we ban single-use plastics?", which covers the problem of plastics in a secondary school chemistry class by way of argumentation and decision making. Role-playing allows students to represent the viewpoints of different important actors in this area both in favor of a ban on their use (fisherman, environmental scientist, teenager, biodegradable material manufacturer) and against (manufacturer of disposable surgical products, teenager, worker in a plastic cutlery factory, director of an oil company). This role-playing was implemented virtually for a class of grade-8 school students (secondary schoolers in Spain). The main findings include the promotion of learning about the chemical aspects of plastics and the change in attitude of some students regarding this issue after preparing and using arguments and counterarguments based on scientific evidence in a debate. Role-playing is well received by students and helps them to experience positive emotions. Students were found to be very critical of the issue addressed, and the COVID-19 pandemic appeared to affect their decisions. © 2021 American Chemical Society and Division of Chemical Education, Inc.

ABSTRACT

Background: Currently, there are no biomarkers to predict respiratory worsening in patients with Coronavirus infectious disease, 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia. Objectives: We aimed to determine the prognostic value of Krebs von De Lungen-6 circulating serum levels (sKL-6) predicting COVID-19 evolving trends. Methods: We prospectively analyzed the clinical and laboratory characteristics of 375 COVID-19 patients with mild lung disease on admission. sKL-6 was obtained in all patients at baseline and compared among patients with respiratory worsening. Results: 45.1% of patients developed respiratory worsening during hospitalization. Baseline sKL-6 levels were higher in patients who had respiratory worsening (median [IQR] 303 [209-449] vs. 285.5 [15.8-5724], P=0.068). The best sKL-6 cut-off point was 408 U/mL (area under the curve 0.55;33% sensitivity, 79% specificity). Independent predictors of respiratory worsening were sKL-6 serum levels, age >51 years, time hospitalized, and dyspnea on admission. Patients with baseline sKL-6 ≥ 408 U/mL had a 39% higher risk of developing respiratory aggravation seven days after admission. In patients with serial determinations, sKL-6 was also higher in those who subsequently worsened (median [IQR] 330 [219-460] vs 290.5 [193-396];p<0.02). Conclusion: sKL-6 has a low sensibility to predict respiratory worsening in patients with mild COVID-19 pneumonia. Baseline sKL-6 ≥ 408 U/mL is associated to a higher risk of respiratory worsening. sKL-6 levels are not useful as a screening tool to stratify patients on admission but further research is needed to investigate if serial determinations of sKL-6 may be of prognostic use.
